Fall 2019 Professional Development Certificate Series on Sustainability

Starting this fall, there will be sustainability classes offered for employees through Professional Development and Training! Learn how UVM walks the talk and how you can get involved.  Attendees who complete all three sessions in the Campus Sustainability Series will be eligible to become Sustainability Ambassadors

All sessions are from 1:30-3:30pm and in Billings 165. These sessions are open to all employees. There are no prerequsites and we will start at an introductory level.

10/14/19 - Campus Sustainability Series: Introduction 

Facilitator: Caylin McCamp, Education & Outreach Coord and Gioia Thompson, Director - Office of Sustainability

Overall Objectives: Create a foundational understanding of how sustainability is prioritized, defined and measured at UVM. Review big picture concepts like climate change and how that reality translates into what we do at UVM.  Outline how sustainability shows up in policy, engagement and academics at UVM. (Other sessions in series focus on operational sustainability on campus).  Offer the basic common language and concepts attendees can build upon for other sections in this series.

Learning Outcomes

  • Able to articulate the connections between the environment, economy and social justice that make up “sustainability”.
  • Be able to better communicate the history of sustainability on campus and why we take a certain approach.
  • Able to consider ways that you or your unit/department can navigate campus in a more sustainable way. Possibly identify ways to work together with us in working collectively towards a more sustainable UVM. Understand how your unit fits into the campus sustainability picture.

11/18/19 - Campus Sustainability Series: Transportation, Energy & Buildings

Facilitator: Abby Bleything, Sustainable Transportation Manager, Transportation & Parking Services; Lynn Wood, Zone Manager, Physical Plant Department

Overall Objectives: Review recent green building projects and innovations on campus. Learn how they contribute to our sustainability goals. Explain how our buildings are heated, cooled and powered and discuss the impact of recent upgrades to our Central Heating/Cooling Plant.  Review all of the sustainable transportation options available to get you to, from and around campus. Learn how to green your commute, stay healthy and save money.

  • Know who to reach out or refer people to with questions with a better understanding of some of the roles on campus related to these programs.

12/9/19 - Campus Sustainability Series: Zero Waste & Dining

Overall Objectives: Develop knowledge of environmental challenges regarding food production, food waste, and packaging waste; explore ongoing and proposed solutions transpiring within our campus community related to the larger planet. Learn where things go when you throw them “away”, what goes where, how much waste is created at UVM and how we can work together to decrease it.

  • Be able to better communicate the history of sustainability efforts on campus and nuances of these programs.
