Research Seminar: Fisheries Research in Lake Champlain

Fisheries management is based on understanding the status of fish populations through assessments and research. Lake trout are stocked in Lake Champlain by the state agencies, and their abundance is assessed annually. Ellen Marsden, Professor, Wildlife and Fisheries Biology Program, Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, University of Vermont, explains that research has indicated rising numbers of lake trout due to successful recruitment of young, wild fish. Evaluation of lake trout and the forage fish on which they depend is being conducted in cooperative work between state biologists and UVM researchers.

Fisheries research is funded by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (through funding leveraged by Senator Patrick Leahy); Lake Champlain Basin Program; and Lake Champlain Sea Grant, the latter for the project: Three-dimensional Habitat Occupancy of Wild Juvenile and Stocked Adult Lake Trout in Lake Champlain.

This presentation is part of the Lake Champlain Sea Grant research seminar series; it took place March 31, 2021.
