NIFA Requirement

The National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) requires program directors, faculty, undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and any staff participating in a NIFA research project, including capacity (formula) funds receive appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research (RCR) and that documentation of such training is maintained and available upon request. This requirement is a part of the the NIFA Grant Agreement Terms and Conditions

UVM's Plan for Meeting the NIFA Requirement

UVM will require all Principal Investigators, faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and staff who are paid (salary or stipend) from a NIFA funded research project awarded to UVM directly or as a subrecipient, to complete the RCR Basic Training Course provided through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). The CITI Basic RCR Course is on-line, available to UVM and covers all essential RCR topics.

The training should be completed as soon as possible and must be completed within the first 3 months on the project.

The Training needs to occur only one time to be valid and recognized for satisfying both the NIFA and the NSF RCR Training requirement.

Students and postdocs will be contacted directly by Research Integrity with a cc to the Principal Investigator, instructing them how to log into CITI and complete the course. Research Integrity will follow up with the students/postdocs on a regular basis until the training is complete and will ask PIs for help with contacting students and postdocs who are delinquent in completing the RCR training.

RCR Notifications

Principal Investigators, faculty, undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and any staff paid from a NIFA funded research project awarded to UVM directly or as a subrecipient, will be sent an email from Research Integrity with a cc to the Principal Investigator, instructing them how to log into CITI and complete the RCR Training.

Research Integrity will follow up on a regular basis with those that require the RCR Training until the training is complete. Research Integrity will ask Principal Investigators for help with contacting anyone who is delinquent in taking the RCR Training.

Principal Investigators are encouraged to inform their grant funded personnel about the RCR Training requirement is a compliance issue and is an important part of their training as scientists.
