BIO
Jeralyn Haraldsen is the founding Director of Research Development at UVM, reporting to the Vice President for Research. In this role, she leads a team of Research Development staff who provide strategic grantsmanship, writing, and project management support to faculty seeking extramural funding to support research, creative, and scholarly activities, as well as institutional programming. She works with the team to: provide professional development opportunities to early-career faculty across all UVM units, including specific workshop and immersion programs; coordinate writing and project management support for large-scale, high-impact proposals for new research centers and institutes; manage the institution’s internal limited submission process for sponsored research opportunities; and ensure that faculty across the University are aware and prepared for new research grant opportunities. She also facilitates the professional development of the staff in Research Development.
Prior to establishment of the UVM Research Development office (2007-2020), Dr. Haraldsen assisted researchers from diverse disciplines in the preparation and submission of over 150 grant and federal contract proposals to a variety of funding agencies, resulting in the award of over $110 million in research funding. The success of this work resulted in the establishment and growth of the office she now leads. At UVM she has contributed to the development and implementation of grant writing programs for early-career faculty members, a weekly funding opportunity newsletter, and promoting research accomplishments at UVM through “Research Week,” hosted each spring.
Jeralyn has a B.S. in Biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and went on to complete Ph.D. training in Molecular Microbiology at Tufts University, and postdoctoral training in parasitology and cellular microbiology at the University of Vermont. She was mentored in providing research development support by working with the Office of Proposal Development at Tufts University. She is an active member of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP), and recently completed her term as the elected Chair of the NORDP Northeast regional group in 2021.
