Common questions:

  1. How do I know which course (1995, 2995, 3995) to register for?
    1. The decision is made in collaboration with your PI.  Refer to the syllabus for individual course descriptions and expectations.
  2. How do I decide how many credits I should register for?
    1. This depends on the number of hours dedicated to research each week. One credit is equivalent to approximately 3 hours of research-associated work per week for the semester.  Students should make this decision in collaboration with their mentor.  It is typical for a student to register for 3 credits which equates to ~9 hours on research-associated work; however, this varies widely across students and labs.  As you begin the new semester, be sure you have a clear understanding of how lab hours translate to credit hours earned and which days/times you are expected in lab.
  3. Can I register for MMG research if my mentor is faculty in a different department?
    1. Yes!  Some departments do not have their own research courses.  In these cases, the student is welcome to register for MMG research courses.  Please submit the Request form attached to this email.
  4. Is it OK to register for research credits in another department?
    1. Yes!  If your mentor is in another department, they will likely ask you to register for the research courses offered by that department.  You should then follow the process outlined by that department to register.  These research credits can still be applied to your degree requirements (degree audit) in the same way as the equivalent MMG course would be applied.
