Every year students have the opportunity to advance their future careers by applying to many competitive scholarships and to be recognized for their outstanding hard work in their preferred area of study. MMG is proud to acknowledge the most recent recipients below.

National Awards

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Body

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship seeks to encourage high achieving students to pursue research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields. The recipients are:

Phi Beta Kappa Society

Body

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. Founded in 1776 at the College of William & Mary, it recognizes outstanding performance in the liberal arts and sciences and derives its name from the Greek phrase Philosophia Biou Kybernetes: “Love of wisdom is the guide of life.” Membership in Phi Beta Kappa is a rare honor, and academics and employers recognize it as a mark of intellectual breadth and exceptional academic performance.

CALS Academic Merit Awards

Lawrence K. Forcier Academic Merit Awards - CALS Senior

Body

This award is given to an outstanding graduating CALS senior who has distinguished themselves through academic achievement and outstanding service. Named in honor of former dean Lawrence K. Forcier who served the college with distinction from 1991-1998. A faculty member must nominate students. The recipient is:

Alexander Kende Academic Merit Award - CALS Junior

Body

This award recognizes an outstanding CALS junior with a demonstrated interest in medicine or biomedical research. The award is named in memory of Alex Kende, a former CALS student who graduated from the Biological Sciences program at the top of his class.  The recipients are:

CALS - Our Common Ground Student Award

Body

The CALS Our Common Ground Student Award recognizes an undergraduate and graduate student enrolled in the UVM College of Agriculture and Life Sciences who has worked to advance UVM’s Our Common Ground values. This student has distinguished themselves through their engagement, service, and character in ways that reflect these values.

MMG Awards

Warren R. Stinebring Outstanding Senior in MMG Merit Award

Body

Dr. Stinebring was the chair of the Department of Microbiology in the College of Medicine from 1967 to 1978 and this award, created in 1997, is in recognition of academic excellence and professional growth demonstrated by a student majoring in microbiology. The recipients are:

Lucille P. Markey Outstanding Senior in MGEN Merit Award

Body

Mrs. Markey was a philanthropist who developed the Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust to provide monies for the advancement of basic medical research. Founded in 1993, this award is in recognition of academic excellence and professional growth demonstrated by a student majoring in molecular genetics. The recipients are:

Sylvie Doublié Outstanding Senior in BIOC Merit Award

Body

Dr. Doublié served as the Director of the CALS Biochemistry program supporting undergraduate majors for over 13 years. This award, established in 2025, is in recognition of academic excellence and professional growth demonstrated by a student majoring in Biochemistry.

Brenda V. Tessmann Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Award

Body

Established in 2012, this award is in recognition of excellence in the classroom as an undergraduate teaching assistant. In 2019, this award was renamed in honor of Brenda V. Tessmann in recognition of her outstanding contributions to MMG laboratory teaching and undergraduate advising since 1987.  The recipients are:

Edward Bresnick Outstanding Senior Award

Nicole J. Ferland Award

Body

This award, in honor of Nicole Ferland, an exemplary 2011 Microbiology and Molecular Genetics graduate, is given to a sophomore or junior majoring in Microbiology or Molecular Genetics for summer research or internship opportunities that enhance his/her undergraduate degree program and help prepare him/her for advanced degree study.
