With continuous NIH funding for 28 years, Dr. Cushman is a practicing physician scientist with research expertise described below. She was inaugural Editor-in-Chief of Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis, a journal of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis from 2016-2023 (opening impact factor 6.1). She has authored nearly 800 peer-reviewed original articles, 2 dozen guidelines and society statements, and >70 reviews or commentaries. She has mentored more than 30 research trainees, with a majority staying in academic positions, and numerous faculty members. She has been an invited speaker or visiting professor at universities and other organizations over 135 times. Dr. Cushman’s career has emphasized volunteerism, with innumerable positions. She was a board director or councilor for the American Heart Association, International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society, and North American Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis. She is an elected as a member of the Association of American Physicians. Her University Distinguished Professor appointment at UVM is the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member.

Area(s) of expertise
Dr. Cushman studies risk factors for heart disease, stroke, cognitive impairment / dementia, venous thrombosis and risk factors for these using molecular epidemiology approaches. She is interested in the connections of cardiovascular and brain health, and vascular origins of cognitive impairment. During the pandemic she engaged in designing and conducting treatment trials in COVID-19 and studies of COVID-19 epidemiology. She has held leadership roles in a number of NIH-funded observational epidemiology studies, notably the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) cohort study, funded since 2022.
