Why might you want to do this?
If you want to manually adjust some, or all, of your students’ final grades at the end of the semester, utilize the Final Adjusted Grade column. Note that the only time to make this switch is at the end of the semester when all of your grading is completed. That’s because, while the default Final Calculated Grade column continues to recalculate and display changing grades as student work is scored or other adjustments are made, the Final Adjusted Grade column is static, and the total is not recalculated, even when new grade data is posted.
When you’ve completed grading, you will transfer all grade data from the Final Calculated Grade over to the Final Adjusted Grade column, then you can edit all, or some, students’ grade totals as you wish. (Even if you’re only editing a few grades, you’ll need to move all grade data to this column.) Here’s how:
- At the top of the Final Adjusted Grade column, click the down arrow and choose Enter Grades.
- Next to the title at the top of the page, click the down arrow and select Transfer All.
- IMPORTANT NOTE: If more grading data is added to the Grade Book after you’ve done this, there will be a discrepancy between the Final Calculated Grade and the Final Adjusted Grade (because the adjusted column is static and won’t be automatically updated). In this case follow steps 1 and 2 but instead of “Transfer” choose “Recalculate all.” However, any adjustments you may have already to students’ course grades in the Final Adjusted column will now be overwritten, and you’ll have to re-adjust the grades again. This is why it’s best to wait until all of your grading is done before you switch to the Final Adjusted Grade and edit grades.
Important last steps:
- Click the Settings gear symbol (top right of grades page) and choose the Calculation Options tab on the right. Scroll down on this page, and select Adjusted Final Grade as the column to release.
- Save and Close
- On your Grade Book home (spreadsheet view), you will now see that the eye icons have shifted to the Adjusted Final Grade column, but those eye icons probably all have a slash through them. This is because, by default, Brightspace hides final grades from students so you have control over when they see them.
To make this column visible to students:
- Click the down arrow at the top of the Final Adjusted Grade column
- Choose Enter Grades
- At the top of this page, click the down arrow next to the page title at top
- From the choices offered, choose Release All.
- Save and close
- The eye icons should now appear without a slash, meaning the column is visible to students
