Starting in 2027, UVM will offer Voluntary Benefits for non-union and NEPBA employees. These employee-paid plans can be elected during Open Enrollment or during a qualifying life event.

Extra Financial Protection for Life's Unexpected Events

An unexpected illness, injury, or hospital stay can create out-of-pocket expenses and financial stress. UVM is offering voluntary supplemental insurance options that can provide additional financial protection when you need it most.

Beginning in 2027, eligible non-union employees and members of the New England Police Benevolent Association (NEPBA) will have access to the following voluntary benefits:

  • Accident Insurance
  • Critical Illness Insurance
  • Hospital Indemnity Insurance

These plans are employee-paid and can be elected during Open Enrollment or a Qualifying Life Event.

How Voluntary Benefits Work

Voluntary benefits are designed to compliment your medical insurance coverage. If you experience a covered illness, injury, or hospital stay, the plan pays a cash benefit directly to you.

You can use the funds however you choose, including for:

  • Medical deductibles, copays, or coinsurance
  • Travel or lodging related to treatment
  • Household bills and everyday expenses
  • Childcare or other family needs during recovery

Benefits are paid regardless of what your medical plan covers, helping provide added financial security when unexpected health events occur.

Remember: Voluntary benefits are supplemental insurance plans and are not a substitute for comprehensive medical coverage. They are designed to provide additional financial protection when covered events occur.
