About the Museum
Our Mission
We center art boldly in learning and conversation.
About us
At the Fleming Museum of Art, we believe art invites us to encounter new perspectives, to ask meaningful questions, and to engage deeply with the world around us. On campus at the University of Vermont, the Fleming is an extension of the classroom, acting as a dynamic space for shared exploration and integrated learning. Each year, thousands of UVM students, community members, and visitors from all over gather here to experience art that brings people together.
Our vision framework: Fleming Reimagined
We are reimagining the campus art museum as a space of unabashed belonging and collective knowledge where all are welcomed and can see themselves reflected. Read more about Fleming Reimagined
Land Acknowledgment and History
As part of a land grant university situated on traditional indigenous homelands of the Western Abenaki, it’s not only appropriate but vital for the Fleming Museum to use art boldly to cultivate discussion about belonging and about what connects us as people. This includes acknowledging the history of this land as a place of gathering and exchange, shaped by water and stewarded by ongoing generations of Indigenous peoples. Acknowledging the continued existence and contributions of indigenous people who have owned, lived on, and cared for this land for thousands of years is in harmony with our mission, a reminder of our past, and a beacon for our interconnected futures.
When the Fleming Museum of Art first opened to the public in 1931, it combined several collections which had been housed in various departments within the University of Vermont from as early as 1827, and included fine art, geology, archeology, anthropology, and an extensive collection of Vermontiana for public display and educational research. The collections have grown and shifted over time, as new works are acquired and we continue to explore what it means to cultivate and steward a teaching collection.

Accreditation
The University of Vermont's Fleming Museum of Art is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). AAM's mission is to champion equitable and impactful museums by connecting people, fostering learning and community, and nurturing museum excellence. Only about 3% of the estimated 33,000+ museums in the United States are accredited and we are honored to be among those who uplift the best practices in our field for collections care, service for the public good, and financial integrity.
