The methods followed in the creation of the dataset, including description of field, laboratory and processing steps, and quality control procedures

Current Methods

  • Sample sites
    Started: 1997-09-01

    Eight sites were selected on and near Mount Mansfield that had varying aspects, elevations and species compositions. Viewing locations were flagged for continuity. Measurements were recorded every 1-2 weeks from early September through October.


  • Started: 1999-08-01

    Measurements modified in 1999 so that % green, % color and % leaf drop total 100%.

  • Measurements
    Started: 1997-09-01

    Measurements recorded include: % of hillside with color other than green (5% categories), % of hillside with leaf drop, predominant species showing color, color quality, Dept. of Tourism color stage, and notes on color pattern. Slides were taken at each viewing.
