Dr. Judith Cohen, Ph.D., a breast cancer advocate and member of the nursing faculty at the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, recently participated in the evaluation of research applications submitted to the Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) sponsored by the Department of Defense. As a consumer reviewer, Dr. Cohen was a full voting member, along with prominent scientists, at meetings to help determine how the $150 million appropriated by Congress for Fiscal Year 2011 will be spent on future breast cancer research. Dr. Carol Vallett from the University of Vermont nominated Dr. Cohen for participation in the program. "As a breast cancer survivor, it means so much to give back to the scientific community and to ensure that research represents the collective interests of consumers and survivors," Dr. Cohen said.
