The Susan B. Hasazi Scholarship memorializes UVM Professor Emerita Susan B. Hasazi, an internationally recognized leader and scholar in special education and inclusive leadership, as well as a trailblazing advocate for students with disabilities and their families. A faculty member in UVM's College of Education and Social Services from 1976 to 2010, Dr. Hasazi's career was distinguished by significant contributions to national initiatives designed to improve educational and post-school outcomes for students with disabilities, and to give the families of these students a voice in state and national policy development. The Dr. Susan B. Hasazi Graduate Scholarship in Education was created to serve as a permanent tribute to her as well as to recognize and support the importance of special education and inclusive leadership at the University of Vermont.

Eligibility criteria:

Preference will be given to current students pursuing a doctoral degree related to special education or inclusive leadership, especially those who hold a leadership role or demonstrate the potential to engage in leadership roles in schools, colleges, universities and social service organizations serving underrepresented students, including those with disabilities.

To be considered, students must complete the Dr. Susan B. Hasazi Scholarship Application by the annual October 31 deadline. Please address the above criteria in your short personal essay within the application.

The founding donors Robert V. and Donna M. Carlson established this scholarship to benefit a Vermont student enrolled in doctoral programs in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Robert and Donna understand the importance of developing future educational leaders in Vermont and beyond, and they created this scholarship to support the advancement of those leaders.

Dr. Robert Carlson is a professor emeritus at the University of Vermont and he, in collaboration with his colleagues, founded and was the original director for ten years of the doctoral program in the College of Education and Social Services. He was also a founding member of the Master's in Public Administration program at UVM. Robert holds an Ed.D. from the University of Rochester, a master's degree with high honors from SUNY Brockport and bachelors from SUNY at Buffalo State. Robert has been a classroom teacher, elementary school principal, and lab school administrator at the University of Iowa.

Donna graduated Magna Cum Laude from SUNY at Buffalo State and pursued graduate courses for the mentally handicapped. She was elected to Kappa Delta Pi honor society in education. A retired educator, she formerly taught in Rochester and West lrondequoit school districts in New York; the Hospital School at the University of Iowa, and in South Burlington School District and at Baird School for the emotionally challenged in Vermont.

It is the hope of the donors that this scholarship will, in time, support one student’s full doctoral expenses at the University of Vermont.

Eligibility criteria:

1. Applicant must be pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the College of Education and Social Services.
2. Priority will be given to Vermont residents.
3. Priority will be given to those who hold a leadership role within the educational community in Vermont, which includes schools, colleges, universities, and social service organizations.

The CESS Research Travel Grants Program encourages and supports doctoral student travel to present research at academic conferences or professional meetings. Grants are awarded to students presenting their research outside of UVM. Students can receive up to $500 in travel and conference reimbursement.

Applications may be submitted at any point before the travel for which funding is requested. You will receive notification within one week after the application deadline (see deadlines listed below).

General Guidelines for All Applications

• Efforts will be made to utilize the available funds to support as many meritorious requests as possible.
• Graduate students must also request funding support through the UVM Graduate College Conference Grants Program.

Additional Guidelines

In addition to the applications forms, applications must include an abstract of the paper/poster, a copy of the meeting announcement (or similar documentation) and a copy of the applicant's curriculum vitae. Additional materials may be attached where deemed appropriate by the applicant. Requests that do not include all required materials will not be considered.

Preference will be given to students who are presenting their first paper/poster, and students who have not received a mini-grant previously.
