BIO
Alex Garlick’s research focuses on legislative institutions, lobbying and health policy in the United States. His book Pre-Existing Conditions: How Lobbying Makes American Health Care More Expensive discusses the effect of lobbying on the cost of health care for Americans. He specializes in quantitative methods and using machine learning techniques to organize data on state legislatures and interest group activity in the American states. Professor Garlick’s work has been published in a number of journals, including the Annual Review of Political Science, Legislative Studies Quarterly and Nature: Scientific Data.
Before joining the UVM political science department, Professor Garlick was a faculty member at The College of New Jersey, and a 2016-17 American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and his B.A. from Middlebury College. He has also worked on local and national electoral campaigns and is originally from Needham, Massachusetts where he was an elected member of Town Meeting.
