The College of Arts and Sciences invites you to the Spring 2018 Dean's Lecture which will be given by Professor Patricia Julien. Her lecture "Stories About Composing" will be Wednesday, March 21 at 4:30 pm in the Memorial Lounge in Waterman.
In this presentation, Professor Julien will talk about her process when composing a new work, particularly when that work involves words. Words influence her writing in several ways: in theatre, trying to create environments or characters with fine distinctions such as “stealthy but not menacing”; in art song, setting poetry for voice and accompaniment; and through literature that sparks the need to respond to something in sound. The presentation will include recorded and live performances. Julien will be joined by guest artists Chris Caswell, Abby Sperry, and Tom Cleary.
A jazz flutist, Julien has been part of the Department of Music and Dance at UVM since 2002. She teaches courses in jazz composition and arranging, jazz harmony, classical music theory, and jazz history. In addition to writing works for mixed-voice choral ensembles, solo voice and piano, orchestra, contemporary chamber ensembles, small jazz combos, and big band, Julien composes original music for dance and theatrical productions (including a 2015 musical, O, Caligula! A Mvsical). She performs locally with her jazz quartet Patricia Julien Project.
The Dean’s Lecture Series was established in 1991 as a way to recognize and honor colleagues in the College of Arts and Sciences who have consistently demonstrated the ability to translate their professional knowledge and skill into exciting classroom experiences for their students – faculty who meet the challenge of being both excellent teachers and highly respected professionals in their own discipline. The award is a celebration of the unusually high quality of our faculty and has become an important and treasured event each semester.
