What work looks like: “On some jobs, I work on camera teams that help steer the visual language of a project. Other times, I work as part of a story team, helping a narrative come to life through scripting and production coordination. Since graduating, my work experience has included shooting from submersibles with the OceanX Media team, working as an Assistant Camera on PBS Nature’s American Amazon and Netflix’s American Symphony, and working as an Associate Producer on the Netflix docuseries Break Point.”
What he loves about it: “I love that working in documentaries and other forms of new media allows me the privilege to constantly step into new worlds, learn new things, and meet people I might never meet otherwise. I also love that my work encourages me to look closely, wonder about things, and never stop asking questions.”
What he gained from a liberal arts education: “Above all else, I learned how to communicate my ideas more effectively through my writing and how to listen with more intention and curiosity. Becoming a better communicator has helped me immensely in moving through the world of film production, networking, connecting with hiring opportunities, and producing my own independent work. The fact that I was able to take multiple courses in astronomy, wildlife tracking, proverbs, Greek, dendrology, anthropology, and screenwriting all in one place helped break open new curiosities and an appreciation for things I had not yet tapped into.”
