Abbas Alnasrawi, Professor of Economics, was a member of the faculty at UVM from 1963 to 1999. He earned a B.A. from the University of Baghdad in 1953 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1965, and was designated University Scholar in the Social Sciences and Humanities for the 1992-93 academic year. Between 1972 and 1977 he was Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Professor Alnasrawi acted as consultant to OPEC, The OPEC Fund, UNESCO and UNDP. He was a member of the American Economics Association, Middle East Studies Association, Arab Society for Economic Research, Middle East Economic Association (President, 1990-1994), Association of Arab-American University Graduates (President, 1984), and Iraqi Economic Forum (President, 1996). Dr. Alnasrawi is the author of six books: Iraq's Burdens: Oil, Sanctions and Underdevelopment (Greenwood, 2002); The Economy of Iraq: Oil, Wars, Destruction of Development and Prospectus, 1950-2010 (Greenwood Press 1994); Arab Nationalism, Oil, and the Political Economy of Dependency (Greenwood Publishing Group 1991); OPEC in a Changing World Economy (John Hopkins University Press 1985); Arab Oil and U.S. Energy Requirements (AAUG Press 1982); and Financing Economic Development in Iraq (Praeger 1967). Honors College Dean, Abu Rizvi, says this of his former colleague: "His ability as a scholar to meld institutional, historical, and technical materials into a realistic and useful picture of oil-exporting economies was deeply appreciated not just by the economics profession but by governmental and multilateral organizations (UN, OPEC). He was deeply concerned by the plight of the people in his native Iraq and tirelessly worked to increase understanding about the political economy of that country and its international relations. He was an admired and respected teacher. He was the finest mentor junior faculty in our department could have wished for (a cohort that includes Jane Knodell, Elaine McCrate, me) and I will miss his gentle guidance and good humor enormously. He loved the Economics Department and returned to it regularly as long as he could." Interim Provost Knodell echoes these sentiments: "This is a big loss for our community. Abbas was an incredible scholar, teacher, and colleague who was tremendously supportive of all of the junior faculty . . . . he had a deep and textured understanding of the political economy of oil and oil-based economies of the Middle East and typified the best of the engaged teacher-scholar model at UVM." Abbas is survived by his wife Susan Alnasrawi; two daughters, Leyla and Kara Alnasrawi; two sons-in-law, Brent Raymond and Franz Schmidpeter; two grandsons, Brodyn Raymond and Kareem Schmidpeter; and his brother Abdul-Ilah Alnasrawi of Karbala, Iraq. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, August 25, at 2:30 pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington.
