On a Saturday afternoon in April, alumnus Braden Duemmler paid a visit to Film and Television Studies students. Duemmler graduated from UVM in 2007 with the first class of dedicated FTS majors. He then went on to the University of Southern California to continue his film studies with the School of Cinematic Arts. His filmography as a director and producer includes Mimic, Shelter, and What Lies Below in 2020 which premiered as the number one film/show on Netflix.

When asked about his experience at UVM he commented on the importance of passionate professors, some of whom are still teaching at the university today, such as Todd Mcgowan and Hilary Neroni. Duemmler cites his undergraduate education in film theory as the foundation to everything he makes today, especially when he writes characters.

While being a part of the film industry, he remains critical of the way the field is structured. He believes that with all the money and power concentrated in such a small group of creatives, it can make it very difficult for filmmakers like himself to gain a spot at the table. On that note, he encourages film students to remain optimistic while having a realistic understanding of Hollywood.

To stay encouraged and inspired, he stays true to his creativity – writing. Duemmler expressed how, no matter how discouraging things can get, as long as he has his laptop and a quiet place to sit, he can stay focused and grounded. He urges prospective filmmakers to find that same creative drive, something internal that can be exercised on no one's schedule but one’s own.

The last great thing he has seen in the theaters is Anora, Sean Baker’s 2024 Academy Award winning film. His favorite thing about the film was the characterization of the protagonist Ani and the sympathetic and nuanced eye Baker has in portraying sex work.
