My experience with Japanese language and culture at UVM has thoroughly enriched my life. When I was sitting in the classroom taking language classes, I never imagined I would one day be living in Japan. I had always had an interest in Japanese studies, but it wasn’t until I got to UVM that I realized just how much I wanted to pursue my educational journey with the Japanese Department. Through the enthusiasm, knowledge, and support my teachers and peers gave me, I found the courage to apply for an assistant language teaching position in Japan through the JET program in 2017, and was accepted. The enthusiasm and knowledge that my teachers passed on to me really motivated me to take the leap and pursue living in Japan. I can happily share that I’m still living here in Japan. I’m now a full time UX & UI designer at a Japanese startup. My language studies at UVM gave me a solid foundation in the language, culture, and understanding of Japanese society. I have been able to forge wonderful friendships with the local people and participate in meaningful cultural exchanges within the community. I truly don’t think my experience here in Japan would be the same if I hadn’t become part of the Japanese Department.
