Sarah Richter received her PhD in Art History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on the global intersections of photography, race, gender, geography, and the African Diaspora, with particular attention to contemporary visual culture and transatlantic histories. She has worked in museums and galleries, curated exhibitions, organized academic conferences, and contributed scholarship including book reviews, a publication with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and forthcoming work on religious kitsch and contemporary photography in the African Diaspora.
At the University of Vermont, she teaches courses including History of Photography, African Art, African American Art, American Art since 1850, The Global Nineteenth Century, and Photography and Performance in the Global South. Before joining UVM, she taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Millikin University, and Georgia Southern University, and has presented her research widely through invited lectures and conference presentations.
