BIO

Grounded in research, conversation and humor, Jaimes Mayhew creates visual languages that speculate and articulate the natures and nuances of a trans lens from an “if about us, include us” perspective. Employing pencils, lenses, fabric and digital realities to build worlds that queer, queery and trans relationships between beings (human or otherwise), Jaimes inspires people (trans or otherwise) to reach beyond their horizons.

Mayhew’s collaborative and solo work has been shown nationally and internationally, including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Hoffmangalerí (Reykjavik), Current Space (Baltimore, MD), and Transformer Gallery (DC) among others. He has received grants and fellowships from The Fulbright Commission of Iceland, The Puffin Foundation, Maryland State Arts Council, Rubys Artist Grants, and The Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund, among others. Mayhew has completed residencies at Vermont Studio Center, The School of Making Thinking (East Branch, NY and Wilmington, NC), The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists (Reykjavik) and Gardarev (Saco, ME).

Reviews of their work have been published in Hyperallergic, Art Papers, Vice and The Washington Post, among others. An article about Mayhew’s work titled “Performing Trans Ontology: The Body (and Body of Work) of Jaimes Mayhew” was published in the academic journal Feminist Frontiers in late 2020.
