Maple Sugaring in a Changing Environment (PBIO 3990)

In Fall 2025, Proctor Maple Research Center (PMRC) launched an upper-level undergraduate course that introduces students to the science and practice of maple sugaring while exploring how environmental and socio-economic changes impact every stage of the process. From studying the composition of maple-dominated forest ecosystems, to trying their hand at tapping trees and practicing how to grade maple syrup, students gain skills through hands-on experience and learn about the intricacies of maple sugaring from researchers, producers, and advocates across the maple community. The course will be offered each fall to provide the basis for maple internships at PMRC in the spring. Questions? Contact Prof. Tim Rademacher

Credit-Bearing Maple Internship at PMRC (PBIO 3991)

Our internships offer students the opportunity to participate in research projects and/or maple syrup production during the sugaring season. Depending on their interests and project availability, students may work with sap flow monitoring equipment, analyze sugar content variations, contribute to climate impact studies, or assist with the maple syrup production process. This immersive experience allows interns to explore the intersections of physiology and environmental science while contributing to ongoing research, including long-term studies that are shaping the future of the maple industry. PMRC aims to equip students with skills and experience for future jobs in agriculture, forestry, or environmental stewardship, while strengthening their understanding of the environmental, economic, and cultural value of maple.

To be considered for the internship, students need to have taken the course Maple Sugaring in a Changing Environment (PBIO 3990).
