High School/Secondary School Grades

• Official secondary school transcript sent by your school (official English translation required)
• First quarter and/or mid-year grades (send when they become available) 

Letter of Recommendation

At least one letter of recommendation is required, preferably from a teacher.

A holistic review of each applicant is at the center of our approach to enrolling a diverse group of students that strengthens the UVM community. Therefore, applicants to UVM through the fall of 2026, including International students and U.S. citizens abroad, are not required to submit standardized test scores, but are welcome to so if they feel it will contribute to their academic record. Both the Common Application and the Apply Coalition on Scoir allow you to indicate if you want your standardized test scores considered.

Students who choose not to submit test scores will not be disadvantaged in any way, as all applicants will be considered for admission, merit scholarships, and selection to the Patrick Leahy Honors College at UVM.

Submitting Your Scores

Your test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency (CollegeBoard or ACT) to be considered official. Allow sufficient time (at least 2-3 weeks) for scores to be received by UVM to meet our application completion deadlines You may send results for all tests you take; our admissions evaluation will consider your highest scores.

All applicants whose first language is not English must have an official test sent to the Office of Admissions directly from the testing agency. We are not able to accept testing from the student.

Minimum Requirements

Students who score between 80-89 on the TOEFL (or equivalent) will be automatically enrolled in an ESOL course in their first semester.

To complete your application, you must show the minimum expenses for one year of study. The most common proof of funding documentation is a bank statement dated within 6 months of your application. Documents can be uploaded directly into your student portal on your application status page or sent via email to admissions@uvm.edu.

Applying for your Visa and I-20 Information

Once an admitted student has paid their acceptance fee to enroll at UVM, they can begin the application process for their I-20 and Visa. Please learn more at the Office of International Education.

International Merit Scholarships 

International students at the University of Vermont are eligible for merit scholarships of up to $25,000 per year. During the application review process, you will be automatically considered for a merit scholarship, there is no separate application. Applicants will be considered holistically for scholarships, Grades, SAT/ACT testing (if provided), extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation will all be considered as part of scholarship review. You will be notified at the time of admission should you receive an international merit scholarship.

Advanced Placement (AP)

Credit is granted for AP exam scores of 4 or 5 in most subjects; scores of 3 are accepted in some areas. Please consult our complete AP chart. To receive credit, either submit your official AP Score Report from the College Board with your application for admission, or once admitted/enrolled, submit your official score report from the College Board directly to the Registrar's office, transfer area.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

If you have completed International Baccalaureate (IB) coursework and received a score of 5 or greater on higher level IB exams, you may be eligible for transfer credit (UVM does not award credit for standard level IB exams). It is not necessary to have completed the entire IB curriculum to qualify for transfer credit. Please consult our IB Guide.

Please submit an official IB transcript along with your application for admission. Up to one year of introductory level credit may be awarded in a discipline. If you are admitted to UVM and have questions about IB credit review, please reach out to the Registrar's office, transfer area.

College Credit Taken in High School

College level coursework completed in high school may be eligible for transfer credit. Coursework must be through a regionally accredited, degree-granting college or university and may be taught within a high school setting; an example of a high school-based program is the Syracuse University Project Advance Program (SUPA). Please submit all official transcripts of college coursework along with your application; transcripts will be reviewed upon admission to the university.

• Four years of English
• Three years of mathematics (Algebra I, Algebra II and geometry or equivalents)
• Two years of the same foreign language (American sign language meets this requirement)
• Three years of a natural or physical science, including a laboratory science
• Three years of social sciences

Many of UVM's colleges and schools have additional requirements.
