UVM Announces New Tuition Discount Worth More Than $18,000 for Incoming New England Students

Eligible first-year and transfer students from five New England states can save more than $18,000 a year on tuition at the University of Vermont (UVM) beginning in fall 2027. 

Through UVM’s new Regional Tuition Break program, qualifying students from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, who enroll in one of 31 select majors will pay an estimated tuition rate of $30,240, more than 35% below UVM’s standard out-of-state tuition rate.

"The Regional Tuition Break makes a UVM education significantly more accessible for students across New England while opening pathways to careers in education, agriculture, the environment, and public service."  

Nearly a third of all UVM majors are included in the Regional Tuition Break program, including every major offered by:   

• The College of Agriculture and Life Science (CALS)  

• The College of Education and Social Services (CESS) 

• The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources (RSENR) 

These programs prepare students for careers in fields such as sustainability, education, agriculture, environmental resources, community development, and public service.

Who is eligible? 

Students may qualify for the Regional Tuition Break if they: 

• Are permanent residents of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Rhode Island 

• Enroll at UVM as first-time first-year or transfer students beginning in fall 2027 

• Declare a primary major in one of the participating colleges (CALS, CESS, or RSENR) 

• Remain enrolled in an eligible primary major to continue receiving the tuition discount 

The Regional Tuition Break, a partnership with the New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE), significantly expands UVM’s existing NEBHE Tuition Break program. Current UVM students who became eligible for the previous version of the NEBHE Tuition Break before fall 2027 may continue to receive that benefit while they remain eligible under the NEBHE criteria.   

Financial Aid and Scholarships 

The Regional Tuition Break will be considered as part of each student’s overall financial aid package and will not preclude consideration for financial aid and scholarship support.  

Commitment to Affordability 

The Regional Tuition Break is one of several steps UVM has taken to make college more affordable. UVM recently expanded the UVM Promise, which covers tuition and fees for eligible Vermont students and families earning up to $125,000. UVM has also eliminated its undergraduate application fee so students can apply for free.
