Starting in Fall 2027, new first-year and transfer students from the five New England states neighboring Vermont can qualify for reduced UVM tuition in more than 30 majors.

The expanded Regional Tuition Break program makes a UVM education more affordable for students across the Northeast while preparing the next generation of leaders, educators, scientists, and changemakers. 

Eligibility 

Students are eligible for the Regional Tuition Break if they are permanent residents of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Rhode Island, and their primary major is in any of the undergraduate programs below.

2027–2028 Regional Tuition Break Rate

Regional Tuition Break students will pay an estimated rate of $30,232, saving them more than $18,000 each year. The Regional Tuition Break rate is 175% of the in-state rate, which represents a discount of more than 37% off the non-resident rate.)

When does the program begin?

The Regional Tuition Break program begins with the fall 2027 entering class.  

If I’m a returning student who enrolled at UVM before fall 2027, am I eligible?
Body

No. The Regional Tuition Break is available only to students who enroll as first-time first-year or new transfers for Fall 2027. Students who received the NEBHE Tuition Break before Fall 2027 may continue to receive that benefit while they remain eligible under the prior NEBHE criteria.  

How were the eligible majors chosen?

The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, the College of Education and Social Services, and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences were selected for this initiative because of the many programs they offer that support service, community impact, and sustainability. Select majors in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences are also included, reflecting UVM's long-standing participation of these majors in the NEBHE Tuition Break program.  

What happens if I change my major?

You must remain in an eligible major to continue receiving the discounted rate.  

If my major is undeclared or undecided can I qualify for the 2027-2028 discount?
Body

Students who apply and enroll as undeclared or undecided in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Education and Social Services, or the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources are eligible for the discount.

How will this affect my financial aid?
Body

All financial resources, including tuition discounts, will be taken into account when determining eligibility for financial aid. Incoming first-year students in the Regional Tuition Break program are automatically considered for merit scholarships.

Will I be considered for merit scholarships if I qualify for the Regional Tuition Break?
Body

Yes, students qualifying for the Regional Tuition Break Program are automatically considered for some merit scholarships. Incoming first-year students should review scholarship information for prospective out-of-state students, while incoming transfer students should review scholarships for transfer students for details about available opportunities and eligibility requirements.
