Lottery Process Overview
The odds of getting a permit depend on how many students end up signing up for the lottery in each residential area of campus. Registration for the Lottery will open at 10:00am Thursday, December 18 and will remain open until Monday, January 5 at 10:00am. Chosen students will be randomly selected and notified by email by end of day on January 5. The chosen students will have until 10:00am Monday, January 12 to purchase their permit. Any students that are unsuccessful in this drawing will be notified by email by the end of the day on Monday, January 5.
Number of Permits Available:
140 Resident Purple Permits
60 Resident Black Permits
180 Resident Red Permits
20 Gutterson Only Permits
How To Sign Up For The Lottery:
If you would like to participate in the lottery, please visit the parking portal after 10:00am on Thursday, December 18th. Go to the permits page and you will see a button to join the permit lottery.
There will be separate permit lotteries held for each residential parking area: Resident Red, Resident Purple, and Resident Black. The lottery options that you are eligible for will depend on the area of campus that you are living in. We have assigned all students an area based on housing data received from University Housing & Dining Services. If you have changed your housing assignment recently and have the wrong area available to you online, please email our office at parking@uvm.edu with proof of your housing transfer and we will help get you into the correct area. Please reach out no later than January 2 for assistance, otherwise we cannot guarantee a response prior to the lottery closing date and time.
Due to less than normal demand in the Resident Purple area, we are going to open the Resident Purple lottery to students living in the Resident Red area as well. Resident Purple permit holders will still be required to park in the Resident Purple areas regardless of where they live on campus.
Resident Red students may sign up for the Resident Red, Gutterson Only, and Resident Purple parking lotteries to increase your chance of getting a permit to park on campus. If you are not interested in having a permit in an alternate parking area, then please only sign up for the Resident Red lottery.
In order to be eligible to join the permit lottery you must hold sophomore standing or above as defined by the university . First-year students are not eligible for permits on campus; information on exceptions to this rule located on the First Year Student Parking FAQs page.
Credits earned from the Fall 25 semester should be assigned to students by the end of the business day December 24. If you believe you should have the required number of credits and you are still unable to sign up as of December 27, please email parking@uvm.edu with your name by the end of day Friday, January 2. We will confirm your credits with the Registrar’s office and ensure that you are added to the lottery if eligible. We cannot guarantee we will have time to verify the information for any emails received after January 2, so do not wait until the last minute in case there are any issues with sign up.
Other Important Parking Information:
For more information on which lots you may park in with your permit please visit our Student Parking page and scroll down to the appropriate permit type.
There are no lot specific permits; permits are sold by residential area. Regrettably, we cannot guarantee that you will always have a spot in the lot next to your residential hall.
If you live in Redstone Lofts or Redstone Commons, you are not eligible for any UVM parking permits. Please check with Redstone Lofts or Apartments administrative offices concerning your need for parking.
Think carefully and plan accordingly regarding transportation alternatives in the event you cannot purchase a permit. You must not bring a motor vehicle to campus if you have not purchased a permit in advance. Motor vehicles parked on campus without the proper permit will be subject to parking violations which can be avoided with proper planning.
**NOTE: Under no circumstances are you allowed to register a vehicle that belongs to another student or their family. Any student found in violation of this policy will have their permit and their parking privileges revoked for the entirety of the academic year. ALL participants involved will be held accountable and no refunds will be granted to the people involved. Should you need to make a temporary arrangement please contact our office in advance to add a vehicle to your permit and we can assist you in the process.
