Joseph Ketter
I am running as a first-year senator to represent the interests of three main groups at UVM: International(chiefly African) Students, Out-of-State students, and Students of Color. While these groups are the ones of which I would focus much of my attention on as a senator, I would of course additionally represent the interests of the Class of 2029 as a whole. One characteristic that I have that I believe would serve me well as a student senator is my ability to socialize with nearly anyone. Through the trials I endured during my upbringing, I have created one mantra which I brandish with me wherever life happens to take me: "Believe the best in everyone.” That mantra sums up how I interact with people. When there is conflict, I deescalate it and ask “why fight each other? What’ll this fix?” When I encounter a stranger on the street and I want to compliment their Star Wars Episode III graphic tee, I will; And I will certainly discuss Anakin’s tragic fall. My knowing how to navigate a wide variety of social scenarios would make me a strong leader during times of adversity and serenity alike. Before attending UVM, I have had a plethora of leadership experiences, many of which have shaped who I am today, as well the organizations I had the privilege of leading. My foray into leadership began as a student council representative at my High School, DeLaSalle. I maintained this position for 4 years, having a hands-on role at school events, and working and communicating in tandem with school maintenance and administration. My second major leadership role was as a senior patrol leader of my Boy Scouts troop, 9060. As a SPL, I was in charge of fostering a fraternal(and somewhat orderly) disposition in our Troop. The final role I would like to share is my role as my school’s Black Student Union’s resource manager. While on paper I was a resource manager, I would go outside of my commissioned role to inform black students that they had resources, and I would create educational mini lectures to teach Black History. While I do not currently see any issues with UVM at the moment, I would like to, as a student senator, protect minority students from the uptick of discrimination on account of race and migrant status. This issue is deeply personal for me, as not a week before I attended UVM, I had an encounter with members of a white supremacist group. While I agree with free speech, as it protects everyone equally, hate speech should NEVER be socially accepted, as it can lead to conglomerations such as the pissants who harassed me. As a senator, I will promise to do my best to never let what happened to me happen to even one student. Thank you for your consideration,Joseph “JB” Ketter ‘29
Sophie Marcus
Hi, My name is Sophie Marcus and I am running as a candidate to hopefully serve YOU in the student government association senate. While I am going to touch on my experience in being on the board for student council, I first want to talk about why I am running for said position. For starters, I have always loved getting involved with my peers, teachers, and staff. What better way to be involved than running for a position to serve for my community as a whole…My school. The reason behind why I like being involved is because I enjoy making a connection with everyone I meet whether that be saying “hi” as I pass someone on a way to class or holding the door extra long for the person behind me. It is important to be able to love communicating with one’s peers when running for such an important leadership position. I want to be the voice for my peers. When I hear people complain about concerns they have with the school or aspirations they have for future events, I am all the more driven to run for SGA Senate, knowing I have the ability to articulate about issues my community is passionate about. After being the vice president of the speech and debate club for 3 years of high school, I know that I am confident in my abilities to relay ideas or concerns. I have been employed by the local hospital in my community for the past 3+ years as a food service aide and it has been one of the biggest gifts in my life. Although my job description says I “just” bring patients their meals, I can confirm I do much more than that. I bring them a “goodmorning,” a smile, a chuckle, and most importantly, a listening ear. Working at the hospital has led me to become a better person by making connections with all different kinds of people, both sick and healthy, both mean and kind, but something they all have in common is they crave hope. I give them hope and a reminder; to keep fighting. I want to provide hope for our school as well through acknowledging the needs we have and working to live up to them.In high school I was an active member on the Varsity Girls Tennis Team. I was the cheerleader for my team when I was both on and off the court. Senior year I was awarded the title of “captain” and will never forget how rewarding this experience was. I will never forget at the end of the season how two of the freshman girls came up to me and told me how they almost quit originally, but that I made them feel as though they belonged and had a voice. Similarly, I can affirm I will be YOUR voice and work to make our community even better than it already is if you vote Soph for SGA Senate!
Emily Hollner
I am running for SGA Senate because I want to advocate for both sustainability and mental health on our campus, while also challenging myself to step outside of my comfort zone. My journey of once feeling small and learning to find my voice has inspired me to encourage others to do the same — to be brave, to take chances, and to believe that they can achieve more than they think. My goal is to create a community where students feel supported, empowered, and connected.I believe my qualities as a leader will help me serve effectively. I am a good listener, creative, organized, strong-willed, approachable, persistent, empathetic, and a true team player. These characteristics will allow me to not only hear and understand the needs of students, but also collaborate to bring their ideas into reality. My past experiences have prepared me for this responsibility. As a Girl Scout, I gained years of experience in service and teamwork. Through teaching CCD, I developed leadership and communication skills, while my work as a behavioral technician for children with autism has strengthened my patience, empathy, and commitment to helping others. These experiences have shaped me into a leader who is both compassionate and determined. The issues I am most passionate about involve connecting sustainability and mental health. I believe that the two can go hand in hand, and I would love to see initiatives such as gardening projects, painting with flowers, or other creative activities that nurture both the environment and student well-being. This approach not only makes our campus greener but also provides meaningful ways for students to relieve stress and feel connected.I know what it feels like to be just another voter who doesn’t think elections really matter. But I want students to know that their voices do matter, and I will always be approachable and open to their ideas. Whether it’s through email, a quick conversation, or just stopping to talk, I want to be someone students can rely on — not just to represent them in SGA, but to encourage them to find their own voices. I am not running just to hold a position. I am running to help students see that they, too, can be brave and make a difference.
Jack Cordery
Hi! My name is Jack Cordery! I am from South Jersey, but I just moved to Delaware. I love to play sports, such as soccer, swim, lacrosse, and water polo. I also love hanging out with my friends, and I was my student council's vice president my senior year of high school! I was a part of a council of 5 people, and we planned and ran every event, game, dance, and fundraiser that our school had. I am running for SGA Senate because I want to take full advantage of what this school has to offer and to make UVM even better than it is now. I want to get involved to be a voice for all students and to make change, whether that be in supporting and expanding the clubs we have on campus, or working with the local and campus authorities to make our campus the safest and most fun it can be. I love working with others to get stuff done in the community, and I take feedback from everyone, not just the people in the Senate. I want to be someone that you can come up to and share your thoughts, concerns, or ideas with, and I will work toward making those suggestions happen. I am especially interested in working closely with all of the clubs that we have on campus to plan greater events, raise more money, and encourage more participation. And this isn't just for the existing clubs, but the future ones as well. I hope that I can count on your vote to make this year the best one yet! Vote Jack Cordery!
Boston Ewing
Politics has been a core part of my identity for as long as I can remember. I am passionate and strong in my beliefs, and will always strive to be a voice for those who cannot use their own. I am a strong believer that cultivating a strong community and social system will breed growth and prosperity in any society, and I hope that I can spark that growth with our community here at UVM. No matter the issue or how it affects me personally, I will always act with the utmost passion to enact any change I deem necessary. I am a strong believer that a person's beliefs are what make them who they are, and I am firm yet dynamic in mine. I am always open to change, and that involves representing every single student at UVM. Rest assured, no matter your background, identity, or goals, I will be your voice for change. I served in the SGA at my local high school in Red Lodge, Montana, as well as an executive board member in the state-level MASC (Montana Association of Student Councils). Through MASC, I was able to spearhead several broad sweeping changes, including a large push for high schools across the state to switch to a weighted GPA system. Here at UVM, I strive to focus my efforts on cultivating a more diverse student culture. UVM is famous for its social filtration system that leaves behind those who don't fit a certain lifestyle. Through organized events, panels, and discussions, I hope that I can help build a campus culture that will truly champion the ideals of diversity and innovation held by the University of Vermont.
Ali Pesina-García
I want to be a part of SGA so that I can engage with both the student body and faculty, and have the opportunity to represent not only my class but other students of color, and be a voice for those who are generally underrepresented on campus. My top priority is to always contribute to creating an inclusive space for everyone, and provide support to students in any way I can. With this position it would be my goal to ensure that UVMs ‘common grounds’, particularly justice and respect, are always met. I pride myself in being a hardworking and resilient person, with one of my key strengths being problem solving. During my senior year of high school we had to reschedule homecoming and our Young women in Leadership Conference. In both instances I reached out to all volunteers, participants and attendees to notify them of updates and schedule changes, and helped re-plan and reschedule both events. I am also very personable, and I am passionate about giving back however I can. Two things I have volunteered for are Girls on the Run as a coach, where I helped run weekly training sessions with elementary students that focused on both their physical and mental wellbeing, and with the American Cancer Society, where I helped with community outreach events. It is important to me that I get to know my community, and that my community knows I am here for them.I know I am prepared for this role because of my previous experiences in leadership, including my time on my city’s Mayor’s Youth Advisory Board, 3 years in student council, and serving on the St. Luke’s Children's Hospital Advisory board I am excited to develop this level of involvement here at UVM, and would be honored to do so as one of your First-year representatives.
Zachary Carrubba
My main purpose for running is to get experience in running for public office, additionally I was not very involved in my high school SGA and it has since become one of my biggest regrets. I’m confident in my ability to deescalate and moderate conflict, communicate carefully and thoughtfully with people who disagree with each other. I was a board member in my high schools board game club for 3 years organizing meetings, communication, and student outreach over the course of those years we grew from 5 to 25 students registered with the club. I was also a member of the band and have a sincere understanding of commitment, dedication, and camaraderie. The main issues I’d like to tackle are getting students out to vote in major elections as well as more local elections, only an average of 28% of 18-26 yo’s vote in mid term elections and I believe meeting them where they are and providing students information about when and how they can vote for their local elections whether they’re out of state or residents would seriously improve not only their view of the democratic process but also help get more students educated and invested in getting their local government to reflect their deepest held values.
Sena Chin
My name is Sena Chin and I am majoring in Human Development and Family Sciences at UVM! I am running for a First-Year Senate position because my life has been built around two morals- connection and community. Serving on UVM's Student Government Association would not only allow me to advocate and strengthen my community, but would build endless opportunities for connection and belonging.I have always been known for being a vibrant, outgoing, and extroverted person. Everywhere I go, I make endless efforts to develop new connections, create inclusive and exciting places for people, and take initiative to stand up for what I know is right. In high school, I spent countless hours working to improve my community all four years-from student government, working in special education, and leading as club president to drive daily change for underrepresented students. I committed myself to leadership and initiative, and in return the greatest gift; seeing the difference I could make in people's lives. At UVM, I am carrying those values forward. As your First-Year Senator, I will work to create a unified class where belonging is the norm. Community won't just be our goal—it will be my guarantee to you. If you want a senator who will listen and lead with energy, vote for Sena on September 8th!
Eamon Giles-McCreary
I’m Eamon Giles-McCreary, a Sustainability, Ecology, and Policy major from Amherst Massachusetts running for a first-year position on the UVM Student Government Association. Having worked on a congressional campaign and spent years as both a high school student government member and an activist, I have what it takes to make the University a space for ALL to thrive, not just those who fit the mold. My passion for creating change is what I pride myself on. I keep finding myself on various committees and councils in my hometown working to improve my community. Using my experience in these smaller forms of government, I am currently working on a congressional campaign in Massachusetts helping to unseat a corrupt U.S. Senator and increase voter engagement in underrepresented communities. I’ve also worked as an activist for many years now, organizing rallies for reproductive healthcare and fighting back against our oppressive (to say the least) administration. I am bringing that same passion here to the University of Vermont. While our school does try to create pathways for all students, there is no denying there is work to be done. If you feel –like I do– that there are systemic problems here at UVM, my campaign is for you. I truly want to hear from and work with you; I will bring your issues right to the administration's doorstep. And even if you don’t directly feel the impact of UVM’s flaws, I guarantee that so many of the people you surround yourself with do. So a vote for me is a vote towards a school community that sees every person, regardless of who they are. Thank you :)
Shabnam Saini
My name is Shabnam Saini, I’m a first-year Political Science and Economics major on the pre-law track, and I am running for a Senatorial position in the Student Government Association. I want to ensure that every student at UVM feels heard, supported, and empowered to be part of our community. Though new to UVM, I believe that I bring a strong foundation in leadership and advocacy. As Youth Governor for the YMCA’s Youth & Government program, I represented student voices at the state level and advanced initiatives to strengthen civic engagement. As President of NHS, I worked to expand service opportunities that connected students with their communities. Competing at the state and nationwide levels for debate has taught me how to listen deeply and build consensus across differences. My experience as Legislative Coordinator for the Vermont Student Anti-Racism Network (VSARN) allowed me to collaborate with VT lawmakers on equity-driven policy. With a passion for law, government, and community engagement, I’m committed to making student voices heard and creating meaningful change at UVM and beyond. That commitment drives how I hope to serve here: by using my experiences to be a bridge between students and the administration—focusing on transparency, accessibility, and collaboration. I would be honored to serve as your senator and welcome your questions, comments, and ideas for making UVM a stronger community.
Angel Castañeda
Hi, my name is Angel Castañeda and I’m running to be one of your SGA Senators! I’ve always loved being involved and finding ways to serve my community. In my time I have served in a wide variety of roles, including as my high school’s Vice President, chair of my county’s student government’s Connect committee, and attended several conferences with the Maryland Association of Student Councils. Throughout these experiences, one of our biggest struggles was getting enough funding to accomplish our projects and navigating the administration to make those projects happen. That experience showed me how important it is for students to have guidance while navigating what can be a stressful and isolating experience. Here at UVM, I want to make it easier for students to pursue their passions. For so many of us, clubs and organizations are where we go to find friends, community, and opportunities and I want to help make those opportunities easier for all of us. My primary goal is to not only make sure existing clubs have the resources and information they need to thrive, but also to make it simple for anyone to start a new club, no matter what interests them. College should be about looking forward to the future and getting involved in what excites you. As your Senator, I want to make our student government more approachable and ensure every student has the chance to be heard, supported, and included.
