Dear UVM family,

The trial connected to George Floyd’s murder has laid bare the deep wounds and raw emotion caused by racism and inequity, and the trauma experienced by members of the Black community. Over recent weeks, we have seen this manifest in the pain of George Floyd’s loved ones, and the distress of those who witnessed his senseless death.

There is no way one jury’s verdict can undo this hurt. But the actions we take moving forward can bring us closer to a better reality for all members of our society.

As an institution of higher learning, we are dedicated to seeking knowledge and building understanding. I encourage you to access the resources available to our community, some of which were shared earlier today in a message from Interim Vice Provost for Student Affairs Erica Caloiero, Sherwood Smith, Senior Executive Director for the Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Jim Vigoreaux.

As I wrote to you last May, we have a shared responsibility to work toward a tomorrow where we feel compassion for one another and where there is justice for all members of our society. We must continue to reaffirm that Black lives matter. And we must stand in solidarity with members of our community who are Black, Brown, Indigenous and People of Color.

I ask that you join me in hoping for peace, and the justice that makes it possible.

In fellowship,

Suresh
