Renee is a clinician scientist, Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Vermont. She has spent her career building a federally-funded critical care clinical research program focused on improving outcomes in critically ill patients through novel supportive care and preventative interventions, as well as through communication with patients and families. She wears multiple academic research hats at UVM including Division Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Chair of the Medical Sciences IRB, and serving as Program Coordinator for the Northern New England Clinical and Translational Research Network. Her national roles have included serving as chair of the NHLBI Clinical Trials Review Panel, as a member of the NIH COVID Guidelines Panel, and as Chair of the American Thoracic Society Critical Care Assembly. She cares for patients in Pulmonary Clinic and attends on the Medical ICU and Pulmonary Consult Services. She also thoroughly enjoys mentoring trainees and junior faculty and contributing to career development.

Michael is a Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine. His research focuses on skeletal muscle biology in the context of physical disability with aging and disease and the development of interventions to mitigate the detrimental effects of these conditions, with over 130 peer-reviewed publications. He has served as a reviewer for NIH F, K, R, P, and U series grants, including as a sitting member of several NIH study sections. He has also served on review committees for other federal sponsors and foundations. He has mentored numerous trainees who have been awarded NIH K awards and subsequently established their own independent laboratories supported by R series awards.
