A collaboration with UVM’s Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine, this certificate program provides a solid foundation in health policy and management while allowing for content and scheduling flexibility to help prepare students in their careers.

Program Overview

Both the certificate of graduate study and the microcertificate programs introduce students to a range of policy, finance, and management issues impacting healthcare and public health and can be taken as a stand-alone program or as part of a master’s, MD, or PhD program.

Our program teaches you to:

  • Identify the main components and issues of the organization, financing, and delivery of health services and public health systems in the U.S.
  • Describe the legal and ethical basis for public health and healthcare services
  • Apply the principles of program planning, development, budgeting, management, and evaluation
  • Discuss the policy process for improving the health status of populations
  • Use systems thinking and apply quality and performance improvement concepts to address organizational issues
  • Prepare for further graduate study or research in healthcare, public health, and related fields

Curriculum

Certificate of Graduate Study:

The Certificate of Graduate Study in Healthcare Management and Policy is an 18-credit, online program that requires three core courses and three electives. This assures a solid foundation while allowing students some flexibility to pursue their own areas of interest.

Three required courses

  • PH 6170 Management in Health Services and Medical Care or PH 6050 Policy, Organization, and Finance in Healthcare
  • PH 6240 Public Health Informatics
  • PH 6260 Legal Issues in Healthcare

Students choose three courses from topical electives

 

Microcertificate:

The Micro-Certificate of Graduate Study in Healthcare Services Administration is a 9-credit, 3-course program consisting of 2 required courses and 1 elective course from a relevant elective course list.

Required courses:

  • PH6170 Management in Healthcare Services and Medical Care
  • PH6210 Controversies in Health Economics

Students choose one course from topical electives
