Jan K. Carney, MD ’81, Honored as Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine
The Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont is proud to announce that Jan K. Carney, MD ’81, Associate Dean for Public Health and Health Policy and Professor of Medicine, has been recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Dr. Carney’s decades-long dedication to public health education, advocacy, and policy continues to elevate the field and inspire learners across Vermont and beyond.
Dr. Carney, a nationally respected public health leader, has made enduring contributions through her work as a physician, educator, researcher, and former Vermont Commissioner of Health.
At the Larner College of Medicine, Dr. Carney plays a pivotal role in advancing public health education and strengthening community-academic partnerships. As Associate Dean for Public Health and Health Policy and Chief of the Division of Public Health, she oversees academic programming, directs the Public Health Program, and leads multiple initiatives that integrate public health principles into medical education and community practice.
Dr. Carney’s research portfolio reflects her commitment to linking clinical practice with public health impact. Her scholarship spans health policy, public health communication, ethics, disease prevention, epidemiologic applications, and improving rural health literacy. Her work has supported innovations in public health teaching, emphasized the importance of health advocacy, and informed approaches to strengthening population health outcomes.
A recipient of numerous accolades—including the Vermont Public Health Association’s Public Health Champion Award and the UVM President’s Distinguished University Citizenship and Service Award—Dr. Carney is also recognized nationally through her leadership roles with the American College of Physicians, where she will soon begin her tenure as President-elect.
The University of Vermont celebrates this well-deserved honor, which reflects Dr. Carney’s unwavering commitment to strengthening public health education, advancing evidence-based practice, and fostering the next generation of public health leaders.
