AAMC Early‑Career Faculty Leadership Development Program

The AAMC Early-Career Faculty Leadership Development Seminar, held each July, is a selective national program for physicians and scientists at AAMC member medical schools who have at least two years of experience as Assistant Professors (from the date of the seminar). The program is designed to support early-career faculty in advancing to the next stage of academic leadership.

The Office of Intercultural Excellence will sponsor the tuition for one or more faculty member(s) accepted to the program. Departments are asked to cost-share travel and lodging expenses.

Who Should Apply

Body
  • Physicians & scientists who have held the rank of Assistant Professor for at least 2 years 
  • Be no more than eight years out of training, with an MD or MD-equivalent degree 
  • Early-career faculty seeking to strengthen leadership capabilities and accelerate career advancement
  • Individuals interested in academic promotion, leadership roles, and strategic career development
  • Faculty who would benefit from national networking and peer collaboration opportunities

Program Objectives

Body

Upon completion of the seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate leadership behaviors that include effective communication, expanding self-awareness, increasing financial acumen, and other leadership topics necessary for skill development and career advancement.
  • Gain insights into overcoming challenges and developing strategies for navigating interpersonal dynamics in the workplace.
  • Create individualized leadership goals that align with their long-term career vision and short-term goals for academic promotion/advancement.
  • Expand their network of colleagues within academic medicine and science.

Institutional Nomination Process

Body
  • The Larner College of Medicine will nominate one or more faculty member(s) for sponsorship
  • Interested candidates must apply internally to be considered for nomination
  • Final participation depends on both institutional selection and acceptance into the AAMC program

  • A 1–2 page letter of interest
  • A current curriculum vitae (CV)

Applications are reviewed by an internal committee for faculty qualifications, leadership potential, and alignment with program goals.

Important Dates & Deadlines

  • Internal application deadline: February 2
  • Internal selection notification: Mid-February
  • Seminar dates: Early July

Selected candidate(s) will be notified by the Office of Intercultural Excellence and will receive guidance regarding how to proceed with AAMC seminar registration and participation logistics.
