How to Take Screenshots

For instructions on how to take a screenshot, select your operating system below.

macOS

To capture only a specific area of your screen:

  1. Open the screen you want to capture
  2. Hold down Command ⌘ + Shift + 4 until your cursor turns into a crosshairs symbol
  3. Click and drag your cursor across the area that you would like to capture
  4. Your computer will make a camera shutter noise and the screenshot will be saved to your desktop when you let go of the mouse

To capture your entire screen:

  1. Open the screen you want to capture
  2. Hold down Command ⌘ + Shift + 3 and then let go
  3. Your computer will make a camera shutter noise and the screenshot will be saved to your desktop

Windows 10/11

To capture only a specific area of your screen:

  1. Open the screen you want to capture
  2. Hold down Windows () + Shift + S until your cursor turns into a crosshairs symbol
  3. Click and drag your cursor across the area that you would like to capture
  4. Your screenshot will be saved to your clipboard when you let go of the mouse
  5. Paste (Edit > Paste, or CTRL + V) the screenshot where you need it

To capture your entire screen:

  1. Open the screen you want to capture
  2. Press the Print Screen Button (it may appear as “PrtScn“)
  3. Your screenshot will be saved to your clipboard
  4. Paste (Edit > Paste, or CTRL + V) the screenshot where you need it

To capture your current active window only:

  1. Open the window you want to capture
  2. Hold down Alt + PrtScn to capture only your current active window
  3. Your screenshot will be saved to your clipboard
  4. Paste (Edit > Paste, or CTRL + V) the screenshot where you need it

iOS

iPhone 8 or earlier:

  1. Open the screen you want to capture
  2. Press and hold the lock button and then the home button at the same time
  3. your phone will make a camera shutter noise if your volume is turned on, and on more recent iOS versions, a preview of the screenshot will be shown in the bottom left corner of your screen
  4. The screenshot can be accessed by navigating to your Photos app

iPhone X or newer (no home button):

  1. Open the screen you want to capture
  2. Press and hold the lock button and then the volume-up button at the same time
  3. Your phone will make a camera shutter noise if your volume is turned on, and a preview of the screenshot will show in the bottom left corner of your screen
  4. The screenshot can be accessed by navigating to your Photos app

Android

  1. Open the screen you want to capture
  2. Press and hold the volume-down button and the power button for a second or two
  3. Depending on the phone, your screen may flash, and you may hear a camera shutter noise
  4. On most Android devices, a preview of the screenshot will show in the bottom left corner of your screen, often alongside buttons for editing/sharing
  5. The screenshot can be accessed in your default photos app
