UVM holds R1 designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, a distinction shared by fewer than 3% of U.S. universities. This achievement reflects the strength of UVM’s research enterprise, to which our postdoctoral scholars are integral.
With seven undergraduate colleges, The Graduate College, the Larner College of Medicine, and numerous Research Centers and Institutes, UVM fosters cross-and trans-disciplinary research and engagement.
Our postdocs benefit from a vibrant campus culture, anchored in the shared values of Our Common Ground, and access to outdoor recreation, arts, and culture in the thriving Burlington area.

About UVM Postdocs
Postdoctoral scholars are vital contributors to UVM’s research mission. Postdocs are defined as individuals who hold a doctoral degree and are engaged in a temporary period of mentored research or scholarly training for the purpose of acquiring professional skills to pursue their chosen career path.
UVM’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) within the Graduate College provides centralized support for postdocs and their faculty mentors. The OPA advocates for postdoctoral needs, coordinates professional development opportunities, and helps foster a vibrant postdoctoral community.
Mentorship
Mentorship is a cornerstone of the UVM postdoctoral experience. Our scholars are embedded in rich, collaborative environments where faculty mentors support both research excellence and career advancement. The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs encourages all postdocs and their mentors to engage in early and ongoing conversations about expectations, goals, and career development. Tools like an Individual Development Plan (IDP) and mentoring compacts can help structure these conversations. Through regular check-ins with their supervisor and via professional and career development programming, postdocs are equipped to thrive during and beyond their time at UVM.
Our Common Ground
We lean into Our Common Ground values – respect, integrity, innovation, openness, justice, responsibility. We are committed to sustaining a climate where all are supported and respected, where innovation is valued and promoted, and where integrity and responsibility guide both professional and personal actions.
