Dear faculty, staff, and students,

Each year, the university recognizes innovative scholarship, teaching and advising excellence, and community citizenship with prestigious faculty awards, described below. The deadline for AY 2023–2024 University Faculty Awards nominations is Thursday, February 1, 2024.

Each award has specific nomination criteria as detailed on its web page. All award nominations will be submitted online via the links provided below.

I hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to recognize members of our faculty for their outstanding advising, teaching, research, and service to the University of Vermont.

Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Awards
The Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Awards recognize faculty for their excellence in teaching undergraduate courses, including creating an environment conducive to and encouraging of learning. Each year, one faculty member in each of the four rank categories (Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Clinical Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor) receives this honor. All full-time UVM faculty members engaged in undergraduate teaching, with the exception of previous award winners, are eligible for the award. Faculty, staff, and students may nominate faculty members for the Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Awards.

Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award
Full-time UVM faculty members engaged in undergraduate advising are eligible for the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award. This award recognizes a faculty member at UVM who has achieved excellence in displaying and enacting responsiveness, availability, concern, respect, and depth of knowledge in undergraduate academic advising. This award is a collaboration of the Office of the Provost, the Student Affairs Committee of the Faculty Senate, and the Student Government Association. Any student, faculty, or staff member at the University of Vermont may nominate a faculty advisor for the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award.

Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Teaching Award
The Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Teaching Award recognizes the teaching contributions of part-time United Academics Represented. All represented part-time faculty who satisfy the criteria are eligible for consideration. Eligible faculty may be nominated by a dean, department chair, or faculty within the academic discipline of the nominee. Faculty, staff, and students may nominate faculty members for the Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Teaching Award. Faculty members may self-nominate.

President’s Distinguished University Citizenship and Service Award
Nominees for the President’s Distinguished University Citizenship and Service Award are lecturers or clinical faculty, full-time tenure or tenure-track faculty, research faculty, library faculty, or Extension faculty who have worked at the University of Vermont for at least five years and have demonstrated sustained and exceptional leadership and service to UVM. This includes, but is not limited to, service at the department, college or school, or university-wide level as a member of committees, governance groups, and advising student organizations or committees. Faculty, staff, and students may nominate faculty members for the President’s Distinguished University Citizenship and Service Award. Faculty members serving in administrative roles are eligible for the award.

President’s Distinguished Senior Lecturer and Lecturer Awards
Faculty who hold the rank of Senior Lecturer or Lecturer are recognized by this award for their outstanding teaching, scholarship, and service. All full-time faculty with a minimum of three years or more in the rank of Senior Lecturer or Lecturer are eligible for consideration. Eligible faculty may be nominated by a dean, department chair, or faculty within the academic discipline of the nominee. Faculty, staff, and students may nominate faculty members for the President’s Distinguished Senior Lecturer and Lecturer Awards. Faculty members may self-nominate.

University Distinguished Professor Award
The University Distinguished Professor Award is the highest academic honor that UVM bestows upon a member of the faculty. Holders of this title are recognized for having achieved international eminence within their respective fields of study and for the truly transformative nature of their contributions to the advancement of knowledge. These faculty members are considered top scholars who have excelled in their disciplines. Nominees must hold a full-time faculty appointment at the University of Vermont at the rank of Professor and must have held faculty status at the university for a minimum of 10 years. Any full-time UVM faculty member, chairs, and deans may nominate any full-time member of the faculty for this award.

University Scholars Award
The University Scholars Award recognizes distinguished UVM faculty members for sustained excellence in research, creative, and scholarly activities. This award will be available in two categories: Social Sciences, Humanities and Creative Arts, and Basic and Applied Sciences (including biological, medical and physical sciences). Nominees are expected to be at the highest rank in their faculty track and to have sustained excellence promoting research, creative activities and scholarship in their discipline at that rank. Any full-time UVM faculty member may nominate or re-nominate any full-time member of the faculty for a University Scholars Award. Please note that this award is not limited to members of the Graduate faculty.
