The Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Teaching Award, presented annually, honors and recognizes the teaching contributions of part-time United Academics Represented faculty. The recipient will receive a one-time taxable cash award of $2,500. Names are displayed on a plaque on the third floor of the Waterman building.

The AY 2022-2023 Award Recipient is:

Ryan G. Kriger, J.D., Lecturer II, Department of Community Development and Applied Economics, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Ryan Kriger, a consumer protection attorney for the Federal Trade Commission, teaches classes on privacy law, consumer protection, and public policy. He aims not only to educate students about the law, but also to provide them with practical skills that will help them to protect themselves in the marketplace and online.

Eligibility/Criteria

All represented part-time faculty who satisfy the criteria below are eligible for consideration. Eligible faculty may be nominated by a dean, department chair, or faculty within the academic discipline of the nominee.

The award Criteria include the following:

  • At least 18 credits of teaching at UVM prior to the award application deadline;
  • At least 3 credits within the past calendar year;
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching;
  • Demonstrated commitment to student learning and pedagogy innovation;
  • Evidence of inclusive practices in teaching and commitment to diversity; and
  • Notable achievement(s) in teaching, scholarship, or service recognized beyond the University that bring recognition to the department, program, college or school.

Nomination Process

Faculty, staff and students may nominate faculty members for the Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Teaching Award. Faculty members may self-nominate. Nominations are due by February 1st every year, and must include the following:

  • Letter of nomination from the faculty member’s department chair or program director;
  • Letter of support from the faculty member’s dean;
  • Up to three internal letters of support from faculty members at UVM including one from outside the nominee’s home department; and
  • Nominee’s current CV.
  • Optional supporting materials (up to three abstracts or papers, or other evidence of creative scholarship)

Nomination material should be submitted with the "Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Teaching Award Nomination" as the file name no later than 11:59 PM on February 1st.

Award Committee

The Committee is made up of faculty members representing degree granting colleges or schools and the University Libraries, and former award recipients. The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs appoints the Chair of the Committee and its members. The Committee recommends candidates for the award to the Provost. The Provost makes the final decision regarding award recipients.

Selection Timeline

  • December 1, annually: Call for nominations opens.
  • February 1, annually: Nominations due.
  • February 1 - March 30: Nomination reviewed by Awards Committee.
  • April 1: Awards Committee submits list of finalists to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at Jokech@uvm.edu. Copy submissions to Jennifer Diaz (she/her) at Jennifer.Diaz@uvm.edu.
  • May 1: The Provost announces award recipient.
