Summer Research Awards
Three undergraduate students mentored by Biomedical and Health Sciences faculty received undergraduate summer research awards sponsored by the University of Vermont. Each student received a $4,500 stipend. The mentors and their students are:
- Lexi Rivet, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, for the project “Effects of naturally-occurring Nos2 Mutations on NO Production in Dendritic Cells of the Immune System”; mentored by Eyal Amiel, Ph.D.
- Cole Royer, Medical Laboratory Science, for the project “Inhibition of Bromodomain-Containing Protein, ATAD2, and its Potential as an Anti-Cancer Therapy in Breast Cancer”; mentored by Melissa Scheiber, Ph.D.
- Logan Sands, Biological Science, for the project “Investigating Loss of STK11 Function in Breast Cancer”; mentored by Paula Deming, Ph.D.
Two graduate students mentored by Biomedical and Health Sciences faculty received Summer Student Fellowships in Cancer Research sponsored by the UVM Cancer Center. The $3,000 stipends support summer research projects by graduate or medical school students over an 8-to-12-week period for cancer-related basic, clinical/translational, or population science research conducted under the mentorship of a UVM Cancer Center Full or Associate Member. Shelley Velleman, Ph.D. will serve as acting department chair for the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders from September 1, 2022 - May 31, 2023 and Michael Cannizzaro, Ph.D. will serve as acting associate dean for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences while current Associate Dean Jeremy Sibold, Ed.D. is on sabbatical.

Noma Anderson, Ph.D., dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, delivered a keynote on the impact and challenges of microaggressions, and the need for a commitment to inclusivity to address them, at the 2022 National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH) Convention in March.
Noma Anderson, Ph.D., dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, developed an article on taking action against microagressions for the ASHA Journal Academy Context Blog and ASHA Now.

Award-Winning Study Reveals Trauma Autistic Women Face During Childbirth
When Laura Foran Lewis explored the birth stories of 16 autistic individuals who identified as women to understand how they make sense of the experience of childbirth, accounts of poor communication, untreated pain, and sensory overload dominated the narratives. Participants in her research expressed feelings that their concerns were minimized, their wishes were ignored, and they were left out of critical communication and education during the birth process. As a child in New York City, Jaza Amchok ’23, dreamed of becoming a professional nurse. Now a first-generation college student in the Professional Nursing program, Amcheck says she felt inspired by her parents' stories of their homeland, a rural area of Tibet with no hospitals nearby and no access to medical care. In high school and college, Sebastian C. Magnotti noticed an unsettling trend: some of his peers misused prescription stimulants with the perception that the substances would help them concentrate better while studying. Laura Lewis, Ph.D., RN, professor of nursing, published "Autism as a difference or a disorder? Exploring the views of individuals who use peer-led online support groups for autistic partners" in the June 2022 issue of Autism.
Lili Martin, D.N.P., RN, PCCN and Rebecca Nagle, D.N.P., PNP, RN, together with Jane Nathan, Ph.D. created a new nursing elective course, Compassionate Care for Nurses, which will be available this fall.

Alumni News
Bonnie Parenteau '68 received the Dean's Distinguished Alumni Award for her service in the role of clinical site coordinator for the Department of Nursing. At a time when the need for clinical experiences for students outpaced available placements, Parenteau cultivated relationships throughout the state and increased the number of sites accepting UVM nursing students for practica.

Toward Bigger Mountains
Some students dream of coaching an Olympic athlete. Wren Pyle ‘23 is already on it. She’s trained competitively, basically since she could walk, starting with swimming, then moving to cycling, ultrarunning, and - what’s a non-skiing endurance athlete to do when winter sets in? – ski mountaineering. She coaches club swimming when she’s not studying. And she’s training a 2026 Winter Olympic hopeful: herself. Read more >>
Bullying Environment and Exercise Dose
It's well-known that regular exercise reduces anxiety and improves mood. Vast amounts of evidence conclude that routine physical activity positively impacts mental health for people of all ages. Research by Dr. Jeremy Sibold, published in the Journal of School Health, suggests that teens who experience cyberbullying — through digital messaging or social media — may need even more exercise, coupled with social support. Prelock Nursing and Health Sciences Research Award for her contributions to the College of Nursing and Health Sciences research mission and for providing impactful research training for undergraduate and graduate students.
Kimberly Krebs, O.T.D. joined the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science as academic fieldwork coordinator for the Occupational Therapy program.
Margaret Maynard, O.T.D joined the department as capstone coordinator for the Occupational Therapy program.
Allyson Muehlemann, D.P.T., a practicing physical therapist and board-certified neurologic clinical specialist, joined the faculty of the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement Science.
