The U.S. News & World Report has ranked University of Vermont among the nation’s top 100 graduate nursing programs. UVM Nursing tied in the 2023 rankings for No. 76 in Best Nursing Schools: Master's and No. 91 in Best Nursing Schools: Doctor of Nursing Practice. The Best Graduate Schools rankings are based on expert opinion about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research, and students.

“A 100% certification exam pass rate, commitment to rural health and equitable, inclusive care, and academic clinical partnerships are among the distinguishing features of UVM’s graduate nursing programs,” said Jennifer Laurent, Holly D. and Robert E. Miller Green and Gold Professor in Nursing Research and Director of Nursing Graduate Studies. “Our on-campus, accredited Clinical Simulation Laboratory enhances opportunities to practice technical skills, patient care, teamwork, and communication; service-learning and interprofessional education are integrated throughout the curriculum, and small cohorts of 25-30 students ensure close mentorship by expert faculty clinicians,” said Laurent.

Clinical placements for all students are guaranteed and arranged by faculty with clinical practice partners that include:

  • Appletree Bay Primary Care, UVM’s nurse practitioner-led practice staffed by faculty nurse practitioners.
  • The University of Vermont Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center serving a population of more than 1 million people in Vermont and northern New York.
  • Community agencies throughout the State of Vermont.

Research is also a key element of nursing graduate study, and UVM ranks among the National Science Foundation’s top 100 public research universities.

The Nursing Master’s curriculum prepares nurse leaders to improve health outcomes and to influence health care systems change. The Doctor of Nursing Practice program prepares nurse practitioners to provide primary care. Both programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Learn more >>
