Sydney Caldwell ’22 works in professor Dimitry Krementsov’s lab investigating how a novel gene interacts with fat cells in developing obesity. The findings will help clarify the molecular pathways contributing to obesity and the impact of nutrition and exercise at the molecular level.
“I have always been fascinated by how diet and lifestyle intersect with molecular biology and medicine ever since my mom used a holistic approach to aid her recovery from ovarian cancer,” Caldwell said. “In the future, this can help to better understand how diet plays a role in the development or prevention of diseases associated with obesity and how obesity affects other processes in the body.”
Sydney presented this research at the UVM Student Research Conference the CNHS Zeigler Research Forum.
