Benchtop to Bedside: A Look Inside Dr. Timothy Tourville’s Lab
Although most people associate osteoarthritis (OA) with aging, this degenerative disease is not limited to older adults. Young adults and athletes are susceptible, especially after suffering a knee injury. Adaptive Sports Open House
The Northeast Disabled Athletic Association offers an opportunity to try a variety of adaptive sport options on Sunday, Sept. 16, including: wheelchair tennis, wheelchair basketball, hand cycling, powerchair soccer, adaptive kayaking (equipment only, no launch) from 9-11 a.m. at Leddy Park; sled hockey from 12-1:30 p.m. at Leddy Park Ice Arena; and adaptive sailing from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at The Moorings Marina (332 W. Laura Mann Integrative Healthcare Lecture: Integrative Cancer Care
Integrative cancer care combines evidence-informed complementary therapies with conventional cancer care. By providing patients with information on lifestyle modifications that may impact on their quality and possibly quantity of life they become empowered and more engaged in their cancer treatment program. This presentation will highlight components of integrative oncology - including nutrition, physical activity, supplements including cannabis, stress reduction and traditional Chinese medicine - that may benefit patients receiving conventional cancer treatment. Language Access and Communication Expo at the UVM Medical Center
The UVM Medical Center Language Access and Communication Expo is a hands-on learning opportunity for physicians, providers, clinical and non-clinical staff and visitors, including: Spanish-only and ASL-only “clinic" experiences, opportunities to learn fingerspelling and basic health-related signs, hands-on training with Video Remote Interpreting technology, DeafBlindness simulations and an introduction to the new Miller Building bedside communication devices. The interactive design of the program makes a half-hour experience commensurate with several hours of classroom or lecture-style learning. Free Nepali buffet-style lunch. There will be raffle drawings with gifts from local businesses for attendees who participate in multiple modules and activities. Sept. 28, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. in the McClure Lobby Conference Room. Miles for Migraine Walk/Run

Volunteers Needed: Special Olympics Fall Games Healthy Athlete Screenings
Special Olympics Vermont seeks the help of volunteers to administer screenings under the direction of Special Olympics Clinical Directors in the areas of physical therapy and nutrition & wellness.
Health Promotion (Nutrition & Wellness)
Health Promotion uses interactive educational tools and displays, motivational literature, and demonstrations to heighten the awareness of athletes, reinforcing the need to improve and maintain an enhanced level of wellness and self-care. The Vermont program offers health information and advice in the areas of nutrition, sun safety, tobacco cessation, and physical fitness; reinforcing key concepts on healthy living, healthy lifestyle choices, and national health issues. Note: Specific certifications are not required, but this role is well-suited to people with the following certifications and backgrounds: Dietitian, NP, RN, LPN, LNA, Medical Students, Nursing Students, Dietetics Students, and other health programs. Non-clinical volunteers are welcome. Training will be provided onsite for all roles.
FUNfitness (Physical Therapy)
FUNfitness is designed to assess and improve an athlete’s flexibility, functional strength, aerobic capacity, and balance. These screenings also educate participants, families, and coaches and provide hands-on opportunities for participants to learn about physical therapy and fitness. Athletes and their families receive educational literature, including a personal “fitness report card” illustrating techniques to improve flexibility, functional strength, balance and aerobic condition for sports performance and daily activities. Core Strength Class
Join your co-workers in Rowell 032 for a core strength and flexibility session using stability balls, resistance tubing and weights on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon beginning September 11. Instructor Janet Franz is a CNHS communications specialist and certified group exercise instructor and personal trainer. The class helps relieve back stiffness, improves mobility and increases functional strength. Participants do not need to wear shoes, but please bring a mat or large towel for floor work. Drop-in fee of $5 suggested; contact Janet Franz to register.
