BIO
Professor Henne is an expert on Middle East politics and international religious politics. His current work focuses on how states use religion and other values in foreign policy, and the effectiveness of religious peacebuilding. His most recent book, *Religious Appeals in Power Politics* (Cornell University Press, 2023) looks at the use of religion in Russian, Saudi Arabian, and US foreign policy. His earlier book, *Islamic Politics, Muslim States and Counterterrorism Tensions* (Cambridge University Press, 2017) explored how Islamic politics intersected with Muslim state institutions to affect their counterterrorism cooperation with the United States.
Professor Henne holds a Ph.D. in Government from Georgetown University and a B.A. in Political Science from Vassar College. He has been a fellow at the University of Edinburgh's Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, and the University of Virginia's Miler Center. Prior to joining the University of Vermont, he worked for 10 years in Washington, DC with the Pew Research Center, the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, and Booz Allen Hamilton.
Professor Henne's work has appeared in Conflict Management and Peace Science, the International Journal of Religion, International Studies Perspectives, International Studies Review, Journal of Church and State, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Peace Research, Religion, State and Society, Politics and Religion, the Review of Faith and International Affairs, and Terrorism and Political Violence. He has also written for the Berkley Center on Religion, Peace and World Affairs, the Brookings Institution, the Center for American Progress and the Washington Post’s Monkeycage, and has consulted with various US government agencies and advocacy groups. Additionally, Prof. Henne provides commentary on Middle East politics to both Vermont and national media.
