We are pleased to announce the publication early this year of With a Penetrating Gaze from the Sidelines: Raul Hilberg, The Destruction of the European Jews, and the History of Holocaust Historiography, Volume 10 in the series “Vermont Studies on Nazi Germany and the Holocaust.” Edited and with an introduction by Wulf Kansteiner and René Schlott, the collection features essays based on contributions to an international conference co-sponsored by the Miller Center in Berlin to mark the tenth anniversary of Raul Hilberg’s death. Regarded by many as the doyen of Holocaust scholarship, Hilberg was a professor at the University of Vermont from 1956 until 1991, and it was to honor his legacy that the Center for Holocaust Studies was founded. Like the 2017 conference, this volume assesses not only Hilberg’s contributions to the field, but works to place his scholarship in its academic, social, and political contexts, all the while assessing not only the value, but also the limitations of his work. Among the authors of the individual essays are Doris Bergen, Magnus Brechtken, Christopher Browning, Hilary Earl, Peter Hayes, Jürgen Matthäus, and Dan Michman—to name only those known as guests of the Miller Center over the years. The book is now available for purchase from Berghahn Books (see advertisement on p. 19), and it will serve as the theme of a symposium featuring Earl, Hayes, and Schlott on November 8, 2026, as the Miller Center marks the centenary of Raul Hilberg’s birth.
