FULL PROFESSOR LECTURE SERIES 2021 – 2022
Trees are wonderful things (McCarroll & Loader, 2004). Through patterns and signals archived in
their annual growth rings, trees reveal information about past environments and climate over 100s to 1000s of years and across many different forest types. Using dendrochronological techniques (the study of tree rings), we can extract this information to reconstruct records of past temperature or stream flow, to learn which environmental factors drive or hinder tree growth and, synthesize the effects of multiple stressors on tree physiology to help fine tune earth system models.
