This internship in alpine ecology will provide an immersive, hands-on experience in working in biodiversity conservation and science outreach, focused on the unique high-elevation communities of plants that occur on the highest peaks in the Northeastern US. The host of the internship will be the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) – a non-profit organization dedicated to scientific research and education around the conservation of mountain ecosystems in the Appalachians. Interns will work with the AMC research team on a variety of conservation projects, including field work and data collection on air and water quality, pollinators, plant phenology and other activities. Interns will also practice science communication through the delivery of outreach presentations on different conservation topics to the public. The location of the internship will be at AMC facilities in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. While this is an unpaid internship, however the AMC will provide food and housing. The length of the internship is approximately mid-May to mid-August. Assessment will be based on reflective journal entries at different time points during the summer along with a final presentation to the AMC and the UVM faculty instructor. For detailed information on the internships and to express interest in applying for one of the two available positions, contact Dr. Stephen Keller (Stephen.Keller@uvm.edu).
