The Department of Community Development and Applied Economics (CDAE) will host its first-ever CDAE Research Slam on Friday, October 16, from 1 to 4 p.m., bringing together faculty, researchers, post-doctoral scholars, and students to share their work and build connections across the department.
The fast-paced event will feature three-minute flash talks highlighting research from across CDAE and the Sustainable Development Policy, Economics, and Governance (SDPEG) Ph.D. program. Presentations may focus on research at any stage—from early-stage ideas and projects in progress to completed research.
The Research Slam will include three blocks of five presentations, with a 20-minute roundtable discussion following each block. The format is designed to encourage conversation, feedback, and new connections among members of UVM’s research community. Light food and refreshments will be provided throughout the event.
The Research Slam was co-created by SDPEG students and program leadership as a way to create more opportunities for students and faculty to come together and share their work. Student organizers Carina Manitius, Dakota Walker, Liam Grima, and Cassady Turnbach worked with SDPEG Director Dr. Daniel Tobin and Program Coordinator Lindsey Bouzan to develop the event.
“Over my first year as SDPEG director, I’ve heard from both students and faculty that there’s a real appetite for more interaction and sharing across our programs,” said Dr. Tobin, Associate Professor and Director of the SDPEG Ph.D. program. “The Research Slam is our response to that. We’ve intentionally designed it to keep the burden of participation low. It’s just four sentences for submission and three minutes for a lightning talk.”
The event is intended to showcase the breadth of research taking place across CDAE and SDPEG while creating opportunities for researchers at different stages of their work to exchange ideas and make connections beyond their immediate areas of study.
While presentations are limited to SDPEG Ph.D. students, post-doctoral scholars, and CDAE/SDPEG faculty, attendance is open to the broader UVM community. Students, faculty, staff, and researchers from across the university are invited to attend, learn about the work happening within CDAE and SDPEG, and participate in the roundtable conversations.
