A simple idea from a Class of 2025 CDAE student has grown into a fall tradition for students in the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics (CDAE). On Thursday, September 24, CDAE will host its annual Apple Cider & Donut Social from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in front of Morrill Hall.
Now in its third year, the Apple Cider & Donut Social was originally encouraged, developed and executed by CDAE alumni Elijah Ghia, who wanted to create a fun, Vermont-inspired fall event that would bring CDAE students together and celebrate the department’s strong sense of community.
What began as an idea to create a distinctly Vermont fall experience has become an annual opportunity for students to connect with classmates, faculty and staff outside the classroom.
“Elijah is a standout individual who really understood what CDAE is all about. During his time at UVM, he understood the importance of community, connection and creating experiences that bring people together,” said CDAE Chair, Jason Konefal. “The Apple Cider & Donut Social came from his desire to create something fun and distinctly Vermont for all CDAE students. It’s pretty special to see an idea that started with a student become a tradition that continues to bring our community together three years later.”
Students attending this year’s event can enjoy free Vermont-inspired fall treats, including apple cider, cider donuts, gluten-free donuts and fresh apples. The event will also feature CDAE giveaways, including free T-shirts and stickers, as well as a raffle for a chance to win a UVM hoodie.
“Events like this give students a chance to connect in a different way,” said Jason Konefal. “It’s a great opportunity to step away from the classroom, enjoy some classic Vermont fall treats and spend time with the people who make up our CDAE community.”
The CDAE Apple Cider & Donut Social will take place Thursday, September 24, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Morrill Hall. The event is free and open to CDAE students and their friends.
