SPAN 2200 is a 3-credit, second-semester intermediate Spanish course that seeks to expand students' ability to communicate effectively in Spanish. It focuses on intermediate grammar and vocabulary acquisition and social and cultural topics that help develop students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in Spanish. At the end of this class, students will be able to write and speak effectively in Spanish about social and cultural issues of importance. This is an online asynchronous course, meaning that there are no required meeting days/times. All work, both oral and written, will be completed via Brightspace and the VHL Supersite. All students should have taken at least SPAN 2100 at UVM or an equivalent course elsewhere or should have taken the language placement test* to enroll in this course. The University of Vermont respects the Department of Education’s definition of a credit hour. In SPAN 2200, a 3-credit course, students should spend about 6 hours a week outside of the classroom preparing assignments and studying for quizzes and exams. As a GC2-designated course, SPAN 2200 also fulfills the GC2 Developing Global Citizens requirement. After this class under this designation, students should be able to: -Demonstrate knowledge of a second language and an awareness of how language shapes culture. -Demonstrate a complex understanding of cultural differences through verbal and nonverbal communication and can use this to broaden their perspectives on diverse ways of knowing and being. -Recognize the influence of cultural norms, customs, and traditions on ways of knowing and/or being in the world and can use this understanding to inform their cross-cultural interactions. *Language Placement Exam: Within three months before enrolling in your first language class at UVM, you need to take the online placement test (even if you haven't studied the language) and enroll in the course level recommended.
