This is an on-line course that does not have scheduled meeting times or locations. The instructor will offer additional speaking practice on Teams. **STUDENTS MUST TAKE THE SPANISH PLACEMENT EXAM BEFORE REGISTERING FOR THIS COURSE. https://www.uvm.edu/cas/swlc/foreign-language-placement SPAN 1100 is the first course in a two-semester sequence of beginning Spanish. It is designed for the student with little or no prior knowledge of the language. The course emphasizes all four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of SPAN 1100, the student: • will be able to introduce oneself and others and acquire vocabulary related to conversations such as personal details, family, sports, food, transport, daily routine, weather, leisure activities, and travel plans. • speak and write about current activities using the present tense • engage in the reading of short, simple texts. • explain more common aspects of life in Spanish-speaking communities and countries.

There are two options: print + digital access or digital access only. Either option is fine. All students must have the textbook when the course begins. The book is used in 1100-1200. In SPAN SP1100, a 4-credit course, a student should expect to work at least 15 hours per week including reading, writing, discussion forums, taking quizzes and watching and creating videos.

Grades are based on participation, weekly assignments, written exams, an oral exam, and final exam.
