About MATH 1234 OL1

Introduction to calculus of functions of one variable including: limits, continuity, techniques and applications of differentiation and integration. Credit not given for more than one course in the pair MATH 1212, MATH 1234 unless followed by MATH 1248 or MATH 1242. No credit following receipt of credit for MATH 1248 or above. Prerequisite: C- or better in MATH 1034 or a score of 76 or higher on the placement assessment.

Section Description

MATH 021 (Calculus 1) is an introduction to the calculus of functions of one variable. This will include an understanding of the concepts of limits, continuity, the definition of the derivative, and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; techniques and applications of differentiation; basic integration, including integration by substitution; and applications of integration including area and volume. Topics will be presented with a level of depth and rigor appropriate for students pursuing degrees in technical fields such as mathematics, statistics, engineering, or the physical sciences. The computer algebra system Mathematica will be used throughout the course.

Section Expectation

This is an asynchronous online class that will have weekly deadlines. You will need to watch videos for each concept. Each week I will post a suggested schedule for that week with the content that will be covered and the assignments that will need to be completed along with the assessments. The suggested schedule will be: Week of Topics and Plan 5/23-5/27 Chapter 2, Quizzes 1 and 2 5/30-6/3 Chapter 3 Quizzes 3, 4 6/6-6/10 Chapters 3 and 4 Quiz 5 and Midterm 6/13-6/17 Chapter 4 Quizzes 6 and 7 6/20-6/24 Chapter 5 Quizzes 8 and 9 6/27-7/1 Chapter 6 Quiz 10 and Final Exam

Evaluation

Grades will be based on WebAssign homework, Mathematica labs, quizzes, exams, and a cumulative final exam. Grading: Homework: 15% Quizzes: 20% Midterm Exam: 30% Final Exam: 35%
