Section Description

Fundamentals of Calculus I is the first course in our two-course applied calculus sequence. The follow-up course is Math 1224 – Fundamentals of Calculus II. Fundamentals of Calculus I is an introduction to the calculus of functions of one variable. This will include an understanding of the concepts of limits, continuity, the definition of the derivative, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, techniques and applications of differentiation, basic integration including substitution, and assorted applications of integration. This basically covers chapters 2 – 5 of the textbook given below. Topics will be presented with a level of depth and rigor appropriate for students pursuing degrees in business, economics, social and life sciences. Please speak to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics if you are unsure if you are taking the correct calculus course.

Section Expectation

Required Course Materials: Online Homework Access Code You will need an access code for MyMathLab online homework, which includes access to the eBook version of the text. The access code can be purchased with or without a hardcover textbook; note that only the access code is required. Option #1: Minimum Requirement MyMathLab: Calculus for Business, Economics, Life and Social Sciences with ebook. This is available directly from the publisher, Pearson, or as a digital code from the UVM Bookstore. ISBN 0134856791 • This is the stand alone Access Code for MyMathLab. If you would like a printed textbook in addition to the homework access code and ebook, choose the following bundle instead of the minimum requirements described above. Option #2: More than Minimum (not recommended unless you feel you need a hard copy of the textbook) Calculus for Business, Economics, Life and Social Sciences with MyMathLab and ebook. This is available directly from the publisher, Pearson. ISBN 0134862635 • This includes a hardbound textbook and the Access Code for MyMathLab. There is a free trial period (10-14 days, I believe) for MyMath Lab. I recommend taking advantage of the free trial period before purchasing either of these options. You may think you will need a hard copy of the textbook, but after using MyMath Lab for a bit you may discover that you don't need it (or vice versa). Due to the condensed nature of this class, students will be expected to spend 15-20 hours per week on this class. This includes watching instructional videos, doing homework, and completing assessments (quizzes, exams, etc.). This class is offered remotely. There is no need to travel to campus to take any of the quizzes or exams.

Evaluation

Grades will be based on weekly discussion board participation, 3-5 homework assignments per week, weekly quizzes, a midterm exam, and a final exam.
